What Happened
The Archaeological Survey of India issued an order on February 13, 2026, removing the traditional Monday closure at Delhi’s Red Fort. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is now open to visitors every day of the week.
Previously, Red Fort — like most ASI-managed monuments across India — was closed on Mondays. This rule has been in place for decades and has caught out countless travelers who planned their Delhi itinerary without checking. That’s no longer a problem, at least for Red Fort.
The change appears to be specific to Red Fort for now. Other ASI monuments — including Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, and Agra Fort — still follow the Monday closure rule as of this writing. Verify before visiting.
Why This Matters for Travelers
If you’re planning a Delhi heritage day, this removes one of the most common scheduling headaches. Red Fort was the only monument in the Chandni Chowk circuit that forced you to pick your day carefully. Now you can pair it with Jama Masjid and the Old Delhi food walk on any day of the week.
This is particularly useful for travelers on tight itineraries — connecting flights with a one-day Delhi stopover no longer need to dodge Mondays. And for groups doing the Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur), it means one fewer constraint in the schedule.
